Adam Burgess on the K1 Women & C1 Men U23 Selection, Nottingham
Thursday, April 14, 2011
This year is my first year as an U23 so selection was always going to be a little more difficult than it had been in previous years with the team from last year all still U23. I felt very ready by the time it came round, I'd been paddling well in the week leading in which gave me a lot of confidence.
I didn't get off to the best of starts though, I made a mistake on my first run of race one that cost me around 9 seconds. Although a credit to my race head seeing the positives in this, going into 2nd runs knowing that without that mistake I'd have comfortably been the quickest. I delivered again 2nd runs to be the quickest however frustratingly picked up 2 clumsy touches. This put me in 3rd. Enough at that stage but I knew I had work to do on the Sunday.
Sundays format was a little different, 2 runs, both counting as the 2nd and 3rd race. My first run was fairly solid, I just executed my plan as I intended. This put me 2nd, so with a 2nd and a 3rd I was looking fairly good for making the team. For the final race I hit gate 2, and then dropped low in upstream gate 3. I quickly recomposed and got back on track and delivered a very fast run to secure the win even with the touch!Joining me on the team is Mark Proctor, and Tom Quinn. Who both also won a race, I think this shows what strength in depth we have in this country. We're looking forward to showing Europe how good we are this summer in Bosnia!
